While researching my ancestry, I read a personal memoir written by an early 1800's American settler in the Ozarks.
In describing his experiences he noted that "We always had plenty of vegetables to eat."
Many homesteads were on "40 acres and a mule". Along with chickens, a vegetable garden was just a part of day to day life.
Many new homes today barely have any yard, much less a garden.
And apparently, even less vegetables.

This year I still have Chard, Kale, BokChoy, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Onions, Peppers, Sweet Potatoes, Eggplant, Rosemary and Basil... rabbits and gophers too!.
I even have hydroponic tomatoes growing in a spare bedroom as I post this.
